The Gage Hotel - Boerne will become the second locations. The original Gage Hotel is in Marathan, Texas and know for being rustic and refined, luxury and historical. Each November, Conde Nast Traveler publishes the Readers Choice Hotel rankings. To those who have stayed at the Gage Hotel in Marathon, it’s no surprise that it earned the No. 1 spot in Texas and came in at No. 17 in the country. Pretty impressive for a small place in what some say is the middle of nowhere! The story of the 90 + year-old Gage Hotel blends the mystique of the Old West with a vision for what can be accomplished with imagination and exquisite taste. It’s also the story of two men. The first is Alfred Gage, born in Vermont in 1860, who moved to Texas as a teenager and found success as a rancher, eventually owning more than half a million acres. He needed a place for ranch visitors and cattle buyers to stay in nearby Marathon, so in 1926, he commissioned El Paso architect Henry C. Trost to design a hotel. In 1927, the Gage Hotel opened a stone’s throw from the railroad that connected Marathon to Alpine, Marfa and the world. Sadly a year later, Gage died, leaving a wife and two daughters. The hotel passed out of the family. In 1978, J.P. Bryan entered the story. Bryan and his wife were in Marathon to buy a home that would be closer than his faraway ranches. The old hotel, long vacant, was just an old building in need of repairs with a handwritten “for sale” sign on it. Bryan called the owner, who was happy to sell the hotel to his only interested buyer for $30,000. Fast forward through decades of painstaking research, restoration and renovation. Today the hotel and its properties reflect Bryan’s passion for historic preservation. A descendant of Stephen F. Austin, Bryan has led both the Texas State Historical Association and the Texas Historical Foundation. He brings not only historical knowledge, but also a collector’s eye for the fine art and interesting furniture and objects that you see everywhere. Some walls feature reproductions of Tom Lea’s work: Bryan, a close friend of El Pasoan Adair Margo, has been active with the Tom Lea Institute she founded for years. The originals by the beloved El Paso artist and much more can be seen in the new Bryan Museum in Galveston. Currently, the Gage Hotel in Marathon is expanding by building an additional 42 rooms.

Upon entering The Brick Vault, you’re greeted by a giant pit: piles of meat on top of the grill, all kinds of sausage hanging from the top, and the most delicious smells you will ever smell.
The original location is in Marathon, Texas next to the historical Gage Hotel. Several additional food items will be added to the Boerne menu providing a full service dining experience. The new restaurant will seat several hundred and will have a large outdoor patio, a great place to enjoy live music with your family while overlooking a natural creek.
The Bryan Museum - Boerne
The Bryan Museum holds one of the largest collections of artifacts about Texas & the American West. Texas contains a remarkable array of buildings and landscapes that document and preserve the state's historical experiences. The mission of The Bryan Museum is to bring the history of Texas and the American West to life. Through its world-class collections, exhibitions, and educational history and literacy programs, students of all ages get a chance to experience the stories of yesterday and write the stories of tomorrow.
The Bryan Museum arose from humble beginnings. At age ten, J.P. Bryan acquired his first two pieces, a Moore’s Patent Front Loading Revolver and a Sharps Patent Four-Barrel Derringer. Both firearms still reside in the collection today.
In October 2013, J.P. and Mary Jon Bryan purchased the old Galveston Orphans Home in Galveston, Texas. After a careful restoration of the historic structure, The Bryan Museum opened in June 2015. With 20,000 square feet of exhibit space and lush, manicured grounds, it has become a Texas destination.
From there, the collection expanded both rapidly and eclectically. With a focus on artists who lived during the West’s Golden Age or when “the dust was still settling,” the museum’s art collection presents a unique opportunity for visitors to personally experience that period of history.
While attending the University of Texas, Bryan started a rare book and printing business with a friend. It was during this period that he began focusing his collecting on Texana. He started with rare books, in which he had a keen interest. Bryan’s uncle, Judge Lewis Wilson of Brazoria County, willed his impressive collection of Texas literature to Bryan, providing him with a strong foundation.
The Bryan Museum in Boerne will present different exciting exhibits throughout the year.
